Can you get an anxiety prescription online in the UK?

Yes. A private GP can assess your anxiety symptoms during a secure video or phone consultation and, where clinically appropriate, issue a prescription for anxiety medication. Common treatments include SSRIs such as sertraline or citalopram, SNRIs and, in some cases, short-term options such as beta-blockers or buspirone. Medication is never prescribed automatically — your GP will take a full history, discuss your symptoms and agree a treatment plan with you.

tapGP is a CQC-regulated service offering online mental health assessments and prescriptions for anxiety where appropriate. If your GP recommends medication, your private prescription is sent electronically so you can collect it from any UK pharmacy or have it delivered.

Important: An online anxiety prescription is suitable for adults with mild to moderate anxiety who are stable and not in crisis. It is not suitable for severe anxiety with psychotic features, people currently at risk of self-harm or anyone in acute mental health crisis.

Frequently asked questions about anxiety prescriptions online

Find answers to the most common questions about getting an anxiety prescription from an online GP in the UK.

What anxiety medication can a GP prescribe online?+
A GP can prescribe a range of anxiety medications where clinically appropriate. These commonly include SSRIs such as sertraline and citalopram, SNRIs such as venlafaxine and duloxetine, beta-blockers such as propranolol for physical symptoms and buspirone for generalised anxiety. The GP will assess your history and symptoms before recommending any medication. Benzodiazepines are generally not prescribed online due to their dependency risk.
How quickly can I get an anxiety prescription online?+
Once you complete the suitability check and book a consultation, many patients speak to a GP and receive their prescription on the same day or the following day. After the consultation your prescription is sent electronically so you can collect it from a pharmacy near you or arrange delivery.
Is an online anxiety prescription legal and safe in the UK?+
Yes. Private GPs in the UK can legally prescribe anxiety medication via a remote consultation provided they carry out a thorough clinical assessment. tapGP is registered with the CQC and all prescriptions are issued by GMC-registered doctors following UK prescribing guidelines.
Do I need a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder to get a prescription?+
You do not need a formal pre-existing diagnosis. Your GP will assess your symptoms during the consultation and reach their own clinical conclusion. If your symptoms meet the criteria for an anxiety disorder and medication is appropriate, they can prescribe and document this in your consultation notes.
Can I get a repeat anxiety prescription online?+
Yes. If you are already on anxiety medication and need a repeat prescription, you can book a review consultation with a tapGP doctor. They will check your current dose, ask about any side effects and issue a repeat prescription where it remains clinically appropriate to do so.
Will the GP share information with my NHS GP?+
We recommend that you inform your NHS GP of any medication prescribed privately to ensure your overall care is coordinated. tapGP can provide a consultation summary for you to share with your NHS GP. We will always discuss this with you during or after your appointment.
When should I seek urgent help?+
If you feel at risk of harming yourself, feel unsafe, have severe symptoms or are in immediate danger, call 999, go to A&E or contact NHS 111 for urgent advice.
