Can a private GP prescribe mental health medication online?

Yes. A GMC-registered GP at tapGP can assess you by secure video or phone and, where clinically appropriate, issue a private prescription for mental health medication including SSRIs such as sertraline and fluoxetine, SNRIs such as venlafaxine and duloxetine, and beta blockers such as propranolol for anxiety. The consultation costs £59 and typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes. Your prescription is sent electronically so you can collect from any UK pharmacy or use a delivery pharmacy.

tapGP provides online mental health assessments for adults aged 18 and over who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression. Our doctors follow UK clinical guidelines and will only prescribe medication where it is the right option for you. If a referral or alternative treatment is more appropriate, your doctor will discuss that with you.

Important: tapGP does not prescribe controlled drugs (such as benzodiazepines or Z-drugs) or antipsychotic medication through this service. If you require those medicines, your NHS GP or a specialist psychiatrist is the right pathway. This service is not suitable for people in crisis, those with active psychosis or those with complex psychiatric needs requiring secondary care.

Common questions about mental health medication online

If you have a question that is not answered here, you can contact the tapGP team before booking your assessment.

Which antidepressants can tapGP prescribe?+
Our GPs can prescribe a range of antidepressants where clinically appropriate. This includes SSRIs such as sertraline, fluoxetine, citalopram and escitalopram, SNRIs such as venlafaxine and duloxetine, and other antidepressants such as mirtazapine. The right choice depends on your symptoms, medical history and any medicines you already take. Your GP will discuss all options with you during your assessment.
Can I get propranolol for anxiety online?+
Yes. Propranolol is a beta blocker that can help manage the physical symptoms of anxiety such as a fast heartbeat, shaking and sweating. It is not a controlled drug and can be prescribed by our GPs where appropriate. It is commonly used for performance anxiety and situational anxiety. Your GP will assess whether it is suitable given your full medical history, including any heart or respiratory conditions.
Does tapGP prescribe benzodiazepines or sleeping tablets?+
No. Benzodiazepines (such as diazepam and lorazepam) and Z-drugs (such as zopiclone and zolpidem) are controlled drugs. tapGP does not prescribe controlled medication through this service. If you feel you need these medicines, please speak with your NHS GP or a specialist.
How long does the assessment take and what does it cost?+
The consultation costs £59 and typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes. It takes place by secure video or phone at a time you choose. There are no hidden fees. If a prescription is issued, you will also receive a written care plan. Pharmacy dispensing charges are separate and vary depending on which pharmacy you use.
Will my NHS GP be informed?+
We strongly recommend sharing your tapGP consultation summary with your NHS GP so they have a full picture of your care. We can provide you with a written record of your assessment and any prescription issued. We cannot send this directly to your NHS practice without your consent.
Can tapGP prescribe antipsychotics or medication for bipolar disorder?+
No. Antipsychotic medication and mood stabilisers such as lithium require specialist psychiatric assessment and ongoing monitoring that cannot be safely provided through an online GP service. If you have or suspect a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or another psychotic condition, please contact your NHS GP for a referral to a psychiatrist.
When should I seek urgent help?+
If you feel at risk of harming yourself, feel unsafe, have severe symptoms or are in immediate danger, call 999, go to A&E or contact NHS 111 for urgent advice.
