What mental health treatments are available from a private GP?

A private GP can assess a wide range of mental health conditions and discuss treatment options tailored to your symptoms. Depending on what you are experiencing, this may include prescription medication such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medicines, referral to a therapist or psychiatrist, structured self-help guidance or a combination of approaches. The right treatment depends on your individual presentation, history and personal preferences — something your GP will explore with you during your consultation.

tapGP offers evidence-based online mental health assessments led by experienced UK GPs. If medication is clinically appropriate, a private prescription can be issued the same day and sent directly to your phone or a pharmacy of your choice.

Important: tapGP is a private GP service and is not a crisis or emergency service. We are unable to treat people who are currently experiencing a mental health emergency, active psychosis or who require urgent psychiatric intervention. If your symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, please contact your NHS GP, call NHS 111 or call 999.

Find answers to the questions we hear most often about private mental health treatment at tapGP.

What mental health conditions can tapGP treat?+
Our GPs can assess and discuss treatment options for a range of common mental health conditions including depression, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety and stress-related conditions. If your needs require specialist psychiatric input we will advise you on the most appropriate next steps.
Can a private GP prescribe antidepressants?+
Yes. A private GP can prescribe antidepressants where they are clinically appropriate for your symptoms. Your GP will review your history and current presentation before making any prescribing decision. Medication is never prescribed automatically — it is always based on a thorough clinical assessment.
How quickly can I get an appointment?+

How does the consultation work?+
Your appointment takes place by secure video call or phone at a time you choose. The GP will ask about your symptoms, how long you have been experiencing them and any relevant medical or medication history. You can ask questions and discuss your concerns openly. Consultations are private and confidential.
Will I need to see my NHS GP as well?+
We recommend keeping your NHS GP informed of any private treatment you receive. Your tapGP doctor can provide you with a summary of your consultation and any treatment recommended, which you can share with your NHS GP if you choose to do so.
Is therapy available through tapGP?+
Our GPs can recommend and refer you to private talking therapy services where appropriate. We can also advise on NHS IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) services if you would prefer to access therapy through the NHS. Therapy itself is not delivered directly by tapGP.
When should I seek urgent help?+
If you feel at risk of harming yourself, feel unsafe, have severe symptoms or are in immediate danger, call 999, go to A&E or contact NHS 111 for urgent advice.
