For urgent symptoms call 999 White spots on tonsils are commonly caused by bacterial infections like strep throat or viral infections. These spots can also result from tonsil stones, oral thrush or post-nasal drip. A qualified GP can examine your symptoms and provide appropriate treatment where clinically appropriate.
While many cases resolve with proper treatment, persistent white spots accompanied by severe pain, difficulty swallowing or high fever require prompt medical assessment. Our NHS-trained GPs can diagnose the underlying cause and recommend effective treatment options.
Treatment may include antibiotics for bacterial infections, antifungal medication for thrush or supportive care for viral causes. We also provide advice on pain relief and home care measures to help you recover quickly.
Emergency care: Call 999 if you have severe difficulty breathing or swallowing, signs of sepsis or cannot open your mouth properly.

Prescription ready in 15 minutesWhite spots on tonsils are commonly caused by bacterial infections like strep throat, viral infections, tonsil stones or oral thrush. Other causes include post-nasal drip, food debris or sometimes oral cancer in rare cases. A GP can examine your symptoms to determine the exact cause.
See a doctor if white spots persist for more than a few days, are accompanied by severe throat pain, high fever, difficulty swallowing or swollen glands. Seek urgent care if you have breathing difficulties or cannot swallow liquids properly.
Antibiotics are only effective for bacterial causes like strep throat. Viral infections, tonsil stones and thrush require different treatments. Our GPs can determine if antibiotics are clinically appropriate for your specific situation after proper assessment.
With proper treatment, bacterial infections typically improve within 24-48 hours of starting antibiotics. Viral causes may take 5-7 days to resolve. Tonsil stones may require removal, while thrush usually clears with antifungal treatment within a week.
Bacterial and viral infections causing white spots can be contagious through droplets when coughing or sneezing. Strep throat is particularly contagious until 24 hours after starting antibiotics. Tonsil stones and thrush are generally not contagious between people.
Home remedies like warm salt water gargles, throat lozenges and staying hydrated can help ease symptoms. However, bacterial infections require antibiotic treatment from a doctor. Avoid trying to remove spots yourself as this can cause injury or spread infection.
Call 999 immediately if you have severe difficulty breathing, cannot swallow saliva, have signs of sepsis (high fever, rapid pulse, confusion), severe neck stiffness or your throat is closing up. These may indicate serious complications requiring emergency treatment.
