Can you get an antidepressant prescription online in the UK?

Yes. A CQC-regulated private GP can assess your symptoms by secure video or phone call and, where it is clinically appropriate, issue a private antidepressant prescription online. The prescription is sent electronically to a UK pharmacy so you can collect or order delivery quickly. The process is legal, safe and follows the same clinical standards as an in-person GP appointment.

tapGP offers online mental health assessments with GMC-registered doctors who can discuss your symptoms, review your medical history and decide whether antidepressant medication is the right option for you. A prescription is only issued when the doctor considers it safe and appropriate to do so.

Important: antidepressants are prescription-only medicines in the UK. A doctor must assess you before any prescription can be issued. tapGP is a private GP service and prescriptions are not funded by the NHS. This service is not suitable for people in crisis or those experiencing severe or complex mental health conditions requiring specialist psychiatric care.

Common questions about getting an antidepressant prescription online

Find answers to the questions our patients ask most often. If your question is not covered here please contact our team before booking.

Which antidepressants can be prescribed online?+
Our GPs can prescribe a range of commonly used antidepressants including SSRIs such as sertraline, fluoxetine and citalopram as well as SNRIs and other first-line options where clinically appropriate. The doctor will choose the most suitable medication based on your symptoms, medical history and any other medicines you take. Not all antidepressants are available via an online consultation and your GP will explain your options during the appointment.
Is an online antidepressant prescription legal in the UK?+
Yes. Private prescriptions issued by a GMC-registered doctor following a clinical consultation are fully legal in the UK. tapGP is regulated by the Care Quality Commission and our prescribing practices comply with General Medical Council guidance. The prescription is sent to a registered UK pharmacy and dispensed in the normal way.
How quickly will I receive my prescription?+
If the doctor decides a prescription is appropriate during your consultation, it is typically sent electronically to your chosen pharmacy on the same day. Collection or delivery times then depend on your pharmacy. Many patients are able to collect their medication the same day or have it delivered the following day.
Will I need a repeat prescription?+
Most antidepressants require ongoing prescribing and regular review. Your GP will advise on follow-up during your initial appointment. tapGP can provide follow-up consultations and repeat prescriptions where appropriate. We also encourage patients to keep their NHS GP informed so that your care can be coordinated effectively.
Can I get an antidepressant prescription online if I have never taken one before?+
Yes, provided you meet the clinical criteria. The doctor will carry out a full assessment of your symptoms before making any prescribing decision. If this is your first time taking antidepressants, the GP will explain how the medication works, what side effects to be aware of and when you should seek further advice.
How much does a private antidepressant prescription cost?+
The consultation fee covers your appointment with the GP. If a prescription is issued, private prescription charges apply at your chosen pharmacy and vary depending on the medication. You can ask the pharmacy for the cost before dispensing. tapGP does not add a markup to prescription charges.
When should I seek urgent help?+
If you feel at risk of harming yourself, feel unsafe, have severe symptoms or are in immediate danger, call 999, go to A&E or contact NHS 111 for urgent advice.
