How do you get antidepressants in the UK?

In the UK, antidepressants are prescription-only medicines. You need to speak to a doctor — either through your NHS GP or a CQC-regulated private GP service like tapGP — who will assess your symptoms and decide whether medication is clinically appropriate. If it is, a prescription is issued and you collect your medication from a pharmacy. The whole process can be completed online in a single day through tapGP, without leaving home.

tapGP offers confidential online mental health assessments with UK-registered GPs who are experienced in assessing depression and anxiety. Where antidepressants are appropriate, a private prescription is sent electronically to a pharmacy near you or by post. Your GP will also discuss other treatment options such as talking therapies and lifestyle changes as part of a complete care plan.

Important: Antidepressants are not suitable for everyone. A doctor must assess your individual circumstances before prescribing. tapGP is not able to issue prescriptions without a full clinical assessment and is not a repeat prescription service. If you are currently taking antidepressants prescribed elsewhere, please inform your GP during the consultation.

Antidepressants compared with other treatment options

Common questions about getting antidepressants

If you have a question that is not answered below, our GPs are happy to discuss it during your consultation.

Can I get antidepressants online in the UK?+
Yes. A CQC-regulated private GP service such as tapGP can assess your symptoms by video or phone and, where clinically appropriate, issue a private prescription for antidepressants. The prescription is sent electronically to a UK pharmacy of your choice. You cannot legally obtain antidepressants without a prescription from a registered doctor.
How quickly can I get antidepressants through tapGP?+
In many cases you can have a consultation and receive a prescription on the same day. Appointments are usually available within a few hours of booking. Once your prescription is issued, collection from your local pharmacy is typically possible the same day. Postal options are also available if preferred.
Which antidepressants can a private GP prescribe?+
Our GPs can prescribe a range of commonly used antidepressants including SSRIs such as sertraline, fluoxetine and citalopram and SNRIs such as venlafaxine. The specific medication prescribed will depend on your symptoms, medical history and any previous treatment. Your GP will explain the options and their potential side effects during the consultation.
Do I need to see my NHS GP as well?+
You do not need to see your NHS GP before booking with tapGP. However, we recommend keeping your NHS GP informed of any private prescriptions you receive so your overall medical record remains up to date. Your tapGP doctor can provide a consultation summary you can share with your NHS practice if you wish.
Will antidepressants definitely be prescribed after my consultation?+
Not necessarily. Our GPs conduct a thorough clinical assessment and will only prescribe antidepressants if they are the most appropriate treatment for your situation. In some cases your GP may recommend talking therapy, lifestyle changes or a combination of approaches instead of or alongside medication.
How much does a private antidepressant consultation cost?+
Consultation fees at tapGP are clearly shown when you book. There is a separate cost for the private prescription itself which you will pay at the pharmacy. Private prescription costs for common antidepressants such as sertraline are often modest. Your GP will discuss the full costs during the booking process.
When should I seek urgent help?+
If you feel at risk of harming yourself, feel unsafe, have severe symptoms or are in immediate danger, call 999, go to A&E or contact NHS 111 for urgent advice.
