Blood test panels – FAQs
Quick answers about ordering, sampling (finger-prick or nurse-taken), results, and next steps.
What are tapGP blood test panels?
Blood test panels are groups of tests that measure multiple health markers in one go (for example, general health, hormones, or organ function). You can order panels directly online.
Do I need to speak to a GP before ordering?
No — you can order directly. If you’d like help choosing a panel or want to talk through your results afterwards, you can book a tapGP consultation at any time.
How do I provide my blood sample?
Depending on the panel, your sample will be taken either:
- Finger-prick (capillary) at home: you collect a small sample from your finger and return it using prepaid packaging.
- Nurse-taken (venous): a qualified nurse takes blood from your arm, usually at your home or a clinic location.
The available option(s) will be shown clearly before you complete your order.
Why do some panels require a nurse-taken (venous) test?
Some markers require a larger sample volume or venous blood to ensure accuracy and reliable analysis. If venous sampling is required for your panel, it will be indicated at checkout.
Are finger-prick blood tests accurate?
Finger-prick tests are clinically validated for many common markers when you follow the instructions carefully. Some markers require venous blood for best accuracy — in those cases, we’ll offer (or require) a nurse-taken test.
Where is my sample analysed?
Samples are analysed in UKAS-accredited laboratories in the UK and processed in line with clinical laboratory standards.
How long do results take?
Results are typically available within 2–5 working days after the laboratory receives your sample.
Occasionally, this can take longer if the sample is delayed in transit or needs repeat analysis.
What if my sample can’t be analysed?
If a sample can’t be processed (for example, due to insufficient volume or clotting), we’ll contact you with next steps. In many cases, a replacement test can be arranged.
Do I need to fast or prepare for my test?
Some panels require preparation (such as fasting). If preparation is needed, you’ll receive clear instructions before taking your test.
If fasting is required, you can usually drink water — but avoid tea/coffee, milk, sugar and sweeteners.
Can I take medication and supplements before testing?
Continue prescribed medication unless a clinician tells you otherwise. Some medications and supplements can affect certain results. If you take supplements (including biotin), follow any preparation guidance provided with your panel.
What if my results are outside the normal range?
Out-of-range results don’t always mean something is wrong — results should be interpreted alongside symptoms and medical history. You can book a tapGP consultation if you’d like clinical interpretation and next steps.
Who are these tests for, and when should I seek urgent help?
Our blood test panels are for adults aged 18+. They’re not designed for emergencies.
If you have severe symptoms (such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, signs of stroke, fainting, or heavy bleeding), seek urgent medical care immediately.
Is my data secure, and can I share results with my NHS GP?
Yes. Results are handled in line with UK data protection laws and medical confidentiality. You can download your results and share them with your NHS GP or another clinician if you wish.
Can I cancel or get a refund?
Refunds and cancellations depend on whether a test kit has been dispatched or a nurse visit has been booked/completed. You’ll see full details at checkout in our terms and conditions.
